The International Courts Association (ICA) was founded in 1986 by a group of scientists, legal professionals, magistrates and students from all over the world to examine and promote the work of (International) Courts around the globe.
The interest in the work of the International operating Courts and Tribunals grew in the early nineties of the last century. The importance of these Courts and Tribunals became more visible to a broader audience with the establishment of for example the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia and the International Tribunal for Rwanda. The demand for more International Operating Tribunals however was not new. Already in the beginning of the twentieth century there were ideas and actions taken to establish International operating courts. With the establishment of the International Criminal Court a development of almost hundred years was completed.
The word "International" in the Associations name does not imply that the ICA only focuses on International operating Courts and Tribunals. There are many regional courts (such as the European Court of Human Rights) and National Courts that are interesting to study and report about. The ICA has been publishing and examining these courts and tribunals for the past 20 years now.
What we do
To understand the work and impact of the Courts and Tribunals it is also important to look at the various subjects dealt with before the courts. For that reason ICA decided not only to publish series, books and journals on the work of the Courts but also to present more general publications on the various fields of Law.
You will find a series on Human Rights documents along with books about Air and Space Law. Books on Sadam Hussein and on the Laws of the Sea. This big variety of subjects makes the ICA a new and interesting publisher on the legal market.
Who we serve
The ICA started to publish only for the members of the association ICA and produced more than 100 publications in different languages. In 2007 the decision was taken to convert these publications and other new projects of the association and make them visible and available for a worldwide audience.
